The rental market has long suffered from a lack of transparency, keeping both renters and landlords in the dark about vital aspects of the screening process. This opacity often leads to unfair practices, missed opportunities, and frustration for all parties involved. Rent with Clara understands that transparency isn't just a desirable feature—it's a fundamental necessity for a fair and efficient rental ecosystem.
The story of Clara is deeply intertwined with my own personal journey as a renter, real estate professional, and landlord. All of these experiences have provided invaluable insights that shape the company's mission and approach.
My journey as a renter has been far from typical, yet every experience has directly shaped my path to building Clara. Throughout my adult life, I've rented over 10 properties across 4 different states—and applied to even more. From single-family homes in Austin to high-rises in New York City, I've encountered a wide variety of landlords and application processes. Sometimes I was required to fill out a paper application; other times, I was asked to email all my sensitive information; and in rare circumstances, I was sent a link to an application portal. Regardless of the method, I always felt like I was sending my personal and sensitive financial information into a void. Decisions about my housing situation were being made without any transparency.
A particularly eye-opening experience came after grad school when I moved to New York City. Anyone who's lived in NYC can attest that the rental market there is unlike anything else. You're never the only one applying for an apartment, and there's always a sense of urgency to submit an application and put down a deposit immediately. When it came to applications, landlords seemed laser-focused on numbers—income, salary, and assets. As a recent graduate who hadn't even started my job yet, I found myself at a disadvantage despite having an impressive rental history and even owning property back in Texas.
I couldn't help but think there had to be a better way to showcase who I was as a renter. Despite having great landlord references, an offer letter from my job, history of property ownership, and even a guarantor, landlords were focused on whatever score their system returned and applying remained an opaque and stressful process.
My experience in the rental market extended beyond being a renter. While working for a residential real estate team in Austin, I collaborated closely with investor clients listing their properties for rent. This firsthand exposure to industry practices revealed the limitations of current screening processes for residential real estate investors and highlighted opportunities for improvement. Many processes were manual, combined multiple systems, lacked security, and failed to adequately address Fair Housing regulations.
When I became a landlord myself, the human element became even more apparent. I took my role in providing housing seriously, recognizing that each application represented an individual or family searching for a home. This realization emphasized the importance of implementing a transparent and fair screening process as a landlord.
Through these diverse experiences and numerous conversations with real estate investors and professionals, I identified several critical issues in the current rental screening process that I aimed to address with Clara:
